After dative prepositions such as mit (with/by), bei (at/with) and zu (to), use dative articles and possessives. The owner chooses the possessive stem; the following noun chooses its ending. Review possessives and accusative articles.

Describe a location: Wo?

For a location, the nine two-way prepositions take dative. Ask Wo? — where? Start with the article, then use the same ending pattern for a possessive.

Nine location prepositions with dative
DeutschEnglish

From articles to possessives

Keep the dative ending pattern
DeutschEnglish
neben dem Bahnhof → neben meinem Hausnext to the station → next to my house; masculine and neuter use -em.
vor der Schule → vor unserer Schulein front of the school → in front of our school; feminine uses -er.
zwischen den Stühlen → zwischen meinen Stühlenbetween the chairs → between my chairs; plural uses -en, and Stühle gains -n.

The preposition and meaning determine the case. The noun’s gender or number determines the ending; the owner determines the possessive stem. The same dative endings also follow fixed dative prepositions such as mit, bei and zu.

Dative endings
Noun type Definite Indefinite My German example
Masculine dem einem meinem mit meinem Bruder
Feminine der einer meiner bei meiner Schwester
Neuter dem einem meinem mit meinem Kind
Plural den — meinen mit meinen Kindern

There is no plural form of ein. Other possessive stems take the same endings: deinem, seiner, ihrem, unserem, euren, Ihren. For euer, use eurem Bruder, eurer Schwester, euren Kindern. Negative kein follows the same pattern: mit keinem Bus — by no bus.

Use the endings in everyday situations
Deutsch English
Ich fahre mit dem Bus. I travel by bus.
Ich fahre mit meinem Bruder. I travel with my brother.
Wir sind bei einer Freundin. We are at a female friend’s place.
Sie wohnt bei ihrer Schwester. She lives with her sister.
Ich gehe zu meinem Vater. I am going to my father.
Wir gehen zum Bahnhof und zur Bank. We are going to the station and to the bank.

Learn these contractions: zu dem → zum; zu der → zur; bei dem → beim; von dem → vom.

Accusative or dative?
Deutsch English
Ich besuche meinen Bruder. I visit my brother. Besuchen takes an accusative object.
Ich fahre mit meinem Bruder. I travel with my brother. Mit takes the dative.
Ich gehe zu meinem Bruder. I am going to my brother. Zu takes the dative, even with a destination.

Say it about yourself

Describe where something is using a possessive. Then say who you travel with, whose place you are at, and whom you are going to visit. Use mit, bei and zu with a possessive.
